Master Classes

We are thrilled to be able to have a great group of leading wine experts from around the world to host our masterclasses, including Masters of Wine (MWs), Master Sommeliers (MSs) and WSET Diploma (DWS) holders.

All masterclasses shall be tutored tastings of six wines related to the theme. They are all $25/pp (or $20 when bought as a "General Admission and Master Class" ticket) - aside from the very special Riedel Sensory Workshop which is $80/pp (which includes a set of 3 beautiful Riedel Veritas glasses valued at $180).

RIEDEL SENSORY WORKSHOP

A wine glass is just a wine glass, right? Wrong! 

A Riedel Sensory Workshop is an entertaining and educational opportunity to learn how the shape of the glass can affect wines, regardless of your wine knowledge.  The workshop will give you a glimpse into Riedel’s 260-year history of design and invention, demonstrating the relationship between the shape of a glass and our perception of the aroma, taste and overall enjoyment of wine in a unique way. With the use of three red wine glasses from Riedel’s Veritas series, see for yourself why shape matters.

Wine lovers will walk away from this one-off tasting with an enlightened perspective on the sensory experience of wine, plus a set of three beautiful Riedel Veritas glasses valued at RRP $180.

NEW YORK: NEW HORIZONS

Connal Finlay; a New York wine specialist, will take you through the new wave wines from across the great state of New York. Over the last couple of decades, New York State has been given many attributes as "one of the best places to grow grapes", "home of the new-world's German Rieslings", "simply the most exciting region in the new world of wine". Along with these quotes from leading winemakers from across the globe, wines from New York have been regularly spotted in the Wine Spectator's Top 100 wines. Get to taste stunning Rieslings from the Finger Lakes and juicy, rich wines from the Hamptons, Long Island.

GEORGIA: THE BIRTHPLACE OF WINE

Georgia is considered to be the historical home of wine as the oldest grape varietal known to us: Rkatsiteli, is native to Georgia and dates back many a century. Many are familiar with the idea of 'orange wines' (locally known as Amber Wine) - where white wines are left on their skins to gain a orangey hue and intensity of aromatics, this concept originated in Georgia. The majority of wines in Georgia are still made using quite traditional techniques that have been used since the last millennia hit. Come enjoy these wines and learn about the Kvervi and skin-contact techniques.

SHERRY, BABY

3.30-4.30pm || $25 || Host: David Allen MW

Since its creation the wines of Jerez have been searched after by Lords and Kings the world over. Sherry is a one of the most ancient, and largely untouched, wine regions producing excellent wines that offer some of the best value the world over. David shall be taking you through all of the many styles from this region with wines that go back 30 and 40 years. Not a tasting to miss out on!

SOUTH AFRICA: WINE REVOLUTIONARIES

 South Africa is easily one of the hot-spots on the wine map for wine lovers and experts alike. It is the combination of climate, technical skill, and experimental tactics that make it such an alluring country. Everything from zesty Chenin Blancs to silky Syrah to chunky and well-structured Cabernet Sauvignon blends, South Africa has it all.

Sunday Master Classes

MAS DE DAUMAS GASSAC VERTICAL TASTING

12.30-1.30pm || $25 || Host: Samuel Guibert

Mas de Daumas Gassac is known as the "Lafite of the South", which for those that don't understand the reference, it is comparing Mas de Daumas Gassac to one of the greatest wines in the world and saying it is of equal quality. The winery is situated in the sunny hills of the Languedoc-Roussillon right in the south of France where it shines as the greatest producer. Revolutionary for their Grand Vin Blanc and Rouge, both blends of many grapes which all come together in perfect aromatic harmony and balance. Wine experts around the world feel privileged to be invited to one of their famous verticals, and we have managed to swindle a mini-version for you hosted by Samuel (proprietor and head-winemaker). Get excited, get very excited!

We shall be tasting the current vintage of the Rose Frizzante to start, 2 vintages of the Grand Vin Blanc, and 4 vintages of the Grand Vin Rouge - going back to 1995!

SICILY: ITALY'S SAVING GRACE

Italy has never had an issue with marketing its graces to the international wine world and at current the world is going crazy for all things Sicily. With its incredible climate and terrain all in the shadow of the volcanic wonder that is Mt Etna, Sicily is a winemaking wonder and paradise all wrapped in to one. Come be guided by one of NZ's leading winemakers who has spent over 6 years of her life working in Sicily and learn about grapes such as Catarratto and Nero d'Avola.

ALL THINGS NATURAL

Let Meg walk you through the hot topic of "Natural Wines". Learn about what they are, why they are different, and why everyone from LA to London are flocking towards them. In essence they are seen as the purest form of wine - something that is 'untouched', and is a couple of rungs above Organic and Biodynamic, too. But let Meg tell you more and no doubt the wonderous wines she has chosen will convert you to their virtues!

AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN EMPIRE

3.30-4.30pm || $25 || Host: Cameron Douglas MS

Dive into the "Empire" by tasting your way through 2 wines from each; Austria, Germany, and Hungary. Cameron has chosen 6 of the best wine producers to prove to you just how great all of these, often over-looked, countries can be on the wine producing stage. Come by to understand why the wines from these countries have some of the richest histories and have been sought out for many a century.

GLOBAL SPARKLING WINES

There are many different sparkling wines made across the world. You know of Champagne and Prosecco, as well as a raft of those made in the new world. But what of Lambrusco? Franciacorta? Cremant? Asti? Cava? Stephanie looks to bring her insight into sparkling wines, and styles of which, to your attention and pit some of the best producers from all of the main regions against each other. Who do you think will come out on top? You might be surprised...
